Family Practice Internal Medicine Obstetrics/Gynecology Pediatrics Surgery

After receiving approval from the Pediatric Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education in 1996, the University of Nevada School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics assembled its first residency classes. With four physicians in the PL-1 class, and two each in the PL-2 and 3 classes, the residents began duties on July 1, 1997. The program has grown by leaps and bounds and our resident complement now numbers 31. There are 12 positions open each year for new physicians at the PL-1 level.
The full-time faculty includes general pediatricians, as well as specialists in adolescent medicine, allergy, developmental pediatrics, endocrinology, genetics, and hematology/oncology.

The University of Nevada School of Medicine PRP curriculum is based on a philosophy that recognizes the need for general pediatricians in Las Vegas, and nationwide. The program is designed to train physicians in general pediatrics, with the belief that the majority of its graduates will proceed to practice in primary care. For those graduates who seek further subspecialty fellowship training or careers in academia, we believe that a solid base of training in general pediatrics will serve well as a foundation upon which to build that future.

The Program utilizes several clinical teaching sites, including University Medical Center, Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, Community Health Centers of Southern Nevada, and others. We feel that this wide variety of settings in which the residents practice helps to provide a broad view of pediatrics.
